Historical Calendar - June 30th

  • 1974 - The fifth annual Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade is held in New York City, drawing an estimated 43,000 people.
  • 1981 - Bob Graham, the Governor of Florida, signs the "Trask Amendment" which prohibits state funding to any universities that recognize gay student groups. The Florida Supreme Court later rules that the law is unconstitutional.
  • 1982 - The Equal Rights Amendment fails to be ratified by enough states, ending a ten year battle for ratification.
  • 1984 - The Unitarian Church votes to recognize and approve gay and lesbian "union" ceremonies.
  • 1986 - The U.S. Supreme Court rules, in Bowers vs. Hardwick, that states have the right to enforce sodomy laws.
