It is tough to be gay

My name is Matt, I am a Syracuse University student and I am proud to be gay. Even though I have my pride, it has always been tough to be gay.

It all started when I was growing up in Cape Cod. In school, the boys would call me names like fag and gay boy and I hadn't even come out yet. I guess I was self conscious about it then, I thought if I publicly declared my gayness, I would get made fun of even more.

As time went on, I slowly became more accepting of my situation and decided to tell my parents that I was gay. This was hard for me because my dad would always make fun of gays on tv, but I decided I had to do it. So, at dinner one night, I said, mom, dad, Pat (my brother), I am gay. The table got really quiet and my dad left the dinner table. I was really sad for awhile until I left for college.

At college, I have met so many people who are gay like me. They are so accepting and have taught me to be proud of who I am. I don't regret telling my family about it, it was the best decision of my life and I am glad to say that they are accepting of it now.

I am currently dating an extremely handsome young man like myself and when some calls me a fag now, I just say so what and laugh about it with my boyfriend and our friends. Great site, keep up the good work.
