Colorado Legislature Approves Non-Discrimination Bill, Strikes Down Marriage Ban
The Colorado Legislature recently passed a measure that would ban discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. A House committee also struck down a proposed amendment to the Colorado Constitution that would deny marriage, along with other legal arrangements, to same-sex couples.
The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Owens which will make this important protection law, ensuring that Coloradoans' employment opportunities are based on the quality of their work and nothing more.
It is also good news that the anti-gay proposal could not muster sufficient support.
Passage of SB 28 is yet another step on the road to full equality for gays and lesbians across the United States.
Colorado S.B. 05-28 specifically prohibits employment discrimination against GLBT individuals.
Sixteen states and Washington, D.C., have laws that prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and six also prohibit gender identity-based discrimination.
