Federal Marriage Amendment Defeated at the Gates

dateline July 14 2004

By a of 48 to 50, in a vote that cross party lines, the Senate rejected the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA), sending a strong message that the politics of bigotry and distration will not prevail.

Bush and those who proposed this extremely divisive amendment could not even gain a simple majority.

"This was an attempt to divide Americans that backfired and instead divided Republicans," said Cheryl Jacques, President of the Human Rights Campaign.

After a year wasting Senate time on Senator Allard's Federal Marriage Amendment, the Republican leadership retreated.
