Readers Respond - Pope - Comment by Janel L. Johnson

Dear Deborah:

I am not what you would call a homophobic, but the article you wrote just did not set well with me. You asked who determines what is "normal". I've found that that's Gods department, since He is the one who made us. In the Bible, Romans 1: 26, 27 says:

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

This scripture clearly says that women would be given to vile (i.e. evil, unclean) affections--which is lesbian--and the same for men, which today we call homosexuality. But I think the way you described yourself in your bio speaks volume. You said you've been active in all things "queer", which means strange, off-beat, unorthodox. So you yourself must realize that the things you partake in as a lesbian are not "normal". I have heard the testimonies of many people who used to be in the homosexual lifestyle. And they speak of being driven and sometimes even ruled by homosexuality. Even the fact that you identify yourself as a lesbian, lets me know you're trying hard to be comfortable and make others except your lifestyle. After all, I never introduce myself as a heterosexual, but that is an intrinsic part of who I am.

I am not afraid of homosexuals (i.e. homophobic), I simply know there's a better way to live; a freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ. And even though I 'm convinced that Jesus is the answer for every problem in the world today, I don't try to stuff Him down anyone's throat, and I really don't appreciate when Gay/Lesbian activists try to make me and my children the the homosexual lifestyle, and agree with it!

I feel that the Pope took a bold stand, and whether you agree with or not, he stand is backed up by the Word of God. But the good new is that you are not condemned to live this lifestyle. St. John 3:16 tells us that God loved the world so much that he gave his Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice to pay for our sins. And if we would just believe in Him, we can lived a blessed life on this earth, as well as have eternal life. What a gracious Saviour!!
