Readers Respond - Pope - Comment by Thomas Hammerlund
Subject: Pope Seeking Second Cheek from Gays and Lesbians?
Dear Ms. Levinson,
I agree that the church should revise its stance on the issue of homosexuality. There are many discrepancies in the Bible that were once thought of as fact, but were later reversed as everyone knows. I believe that the church should especially live up to the creeds, "judge not lest ye be judged" and "love thy neighbor".
However, as a reporter, I consider you to be a representative of the GLBT community. Isn't the GLBT community all about acceptance and tolerance?
I understand the reason you wrote the article, you were offended that the pope said your lifestyle is wrong and sinful. Therefore you wrote the article on the defensive. In the first paragraph you write, "Pope John Paul reacted with anger and venom toward critics and criticisms of the Catholic Church's policies towards gays and lesbians." Do you understand the problem? The pope said those most recent things because he was on the offensive. Now you have wrote an article retaliating. My question to you is, how are you going to break the cycle? I don't think the way to change people's minds is by attacking people's beliefs.
Thank you for your time,
Tom Hammerlund
