Readers Respond - Pope - Comment by Marissa Subject: Gay bashing? I understand some of your frustration and anger, yet I believe that your recent article on the Pope and your attacks against his, Church's, and Christ's position on homosexuality is completely wrong and unfair. The Pope as are all individuals is free to follow, explain, and encourage the truths of Christianity. He should not be attacked because he repeats the words and sentiments of Jesus Christ. The Pope believes in Christ and should follow and encourage the teachings of Christ despite what others believe or feel. Jesus nor the Pope say that individuals are evil. The Pope's words indicate that homosexual activities and behavior are immoral. He uses for his basis and reference the words of Christ, which are the words to which Christians should try to adhere. Am I missing something or does the Bible clearly denounce homosexual acts?!!!! No one should say individuals are evil in themselves; however, we all must determine the morality of certain acts particularly if we are religious leaders such as the Pope. Jesus clearly encourages us to judge acts. He also tells us what acts are right and which are wrong and does not mince words over denouncing homosexuality among other things. (He also denounces psychics and the like, damning them and their followers to hell in certain parts of Holy Scripture.) The problem is that individuals such as yourself blame the Pope for taking the side of Christ in the issue of homosexual activity. Instead of attacking Christ, those who support homosexual activity want to attack the Pope and steal from him his right to follow his own religion and certain teachings therein defined by the Lord, Jesus Christ Himself. If you read the Bible, you will see that your problem is with Christ and not with his earthly representative or vicar of the Church, the Pope. I have always been Catholic, as have my parents and theirs. I have never been taught to hate, nor have I been taught to attack others because I do not like how they follow the laws of their religion or for how they support and act upon their religion and beliefs. Yet, I know that actions should be considered based on Christ's teachings and either condemned or encouraged based on that consideration. The Pope shows his religion is not worn on the sleeve. He continues to uphold truth, even though it is unpopular and despite the continuous and infinite criticisms which I am sure make him feel as badly as you and other homosexual supporters feel when you hear the Church's position on gay sex and gay activity. Still, it is wrong to denounce a person because they follow and support what is in their Bible, particularly if that person is a religious leader who is simply doing his job, fulfilling a vocation ordained and assigned by Christ, the Lord. No matter what you believe, Jesus Christ is on record damning those who partake in homosexual activity. Christians, therefore, are not wrong in identifying homosexual behavior and practices as wrong. (Like I said, no one should judge a person's soul or conscience, but judging acts is sound and moral, particularly if the Judgment Measuring Stick is Christ, the Truth, and the Word of God! If a Christian tells you what Scriptures openly, directly, and undeniably denounce gay sex and behavior and that based on Christ's position and words, he or she does not feel homosexuality is right, you are wrong to attack that person and are guilty of not loving your neighbor. You can tell that person that you do not agree with their opinion and that their opinion is incorrect and that it speaks of evil, if that is how you feel. However, to just attack someone for supporting and stressing what is in their Bible is wrong! If your Bible says homosexuality is not a damnable offense, fine. The Christian Bibles say it is a damnable offense. I believe you are angry because you cannot convert "thy" neighbor and because thy neighbor, in this case, has behind him the very teachings and Words of Christ, the Lord. Take it up with Christ, not with the Church Please. Gay bashing? Christian/Pope bashing, more like! If you only how the Church proves daily, daily, daily that it loves homosexuals even though their behavior is sinful, if it is gay sex and acts, I mean, you would be ashamed. If the Church did not love homosexual individuals and other sinners like myself, the charities which are designed to help the poor, atheistic and non-Christian nations, AIDS victims, drug addicts, homeless and others would not exist! So many AIDS victims who caught the terrible disease as a result of homosexual acts would not be helped on a daily basis by the Church. If the Pope, did not love all individuals, even those who are openly gay, he would encourage Catholics not to give to charities, Catholic Christian charities which help homosexuals who have contracted AIDS. The true measure of loving thy neighbor does not lie in what someone says about that person's actions but lies in what someone does to help even the brother or sister whose actions are considered immoral or contradictory to one's own beliefs or religion, that religion and belief system in the case of the POPE are based upon Christianity and the Sacred, True, and Holy Words of Christ as described and cited in Holy Scriptures. Have a great day and please pray for me, for yourself and for all individuals that we may be better people, find Truth in our lives, live good lives, and get along with each other despite our differences. Sincerely,
