Readers Respond - Pope - Comment by Paul F. Halyung
Subject: Pride? In What?
What exactly is there to be proud about in being gay or lesbian?
I am not going to prattle about "family values" or "Bible Belt" truths, but I can say that in all honesty, being a true-blue heterosexual male, whose mother nor father had to guide my sexual compass to TRUE NORTH -if you are not STRAIGHT - you are BENT. (The Brits do have a way with words, don't they?).
I admire the Catholic Church, even though I am not a practicing Christian, and if I were, I would not attest to being Catholic, rather a Protestant - and those (namely the Unitarian gay lovers, and the United Church) have not much to be proud of. The Pope at least says in public what a lot of us normal people feel in our hearts. I admire his courage to face the slings and arrows of rebuke and disdain he will surely face - after all it was WELL EARNED.
If only more public figures would attack homosexual acts as he did, and label them as he did, un-natural and deviant, and foremost, that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
Maybe with therapy, understanding and guidance, those whose lives are poisoned with the delusions of sexual misadventure can be cured one day. I think a lot will come of the understanding that like many festering, long-standing diseases (amebic dysentery, measles, hemophilia) that homosexuality will be recognized finally as a disorder that we CAN conquer if we only try.
