Readers Respond - Pope - Comment by Cacodder@aol.com Subject: The Pope I read your article on the web about the Pope's recent speech surrounding the gay pride parade. As a Catholic AND a friend of several lesbians, I was proud that His Holiness made that speech and stood up to defend the beliefs of the Church and people like me. The Church has never said that gays and lesbians were evil in and of themselves and in fact, the National Conference of Bishops has encouraged all Catholics to love those who are gay or lesbian. While I do not condone the lifestyle, I do not condemn those who live it, as it is not my job to judge. What the Church has said time and time again for those who will listen, is that the sexual ACT of gays and lesbians is wrong and "evil", just as the Church has said for STRAIGHT couples who have sex when they are unmarried. It works both ways. As the leader and teacher of the Church, it is the job of the Pope to say what he has said, and I agree with him 100%. Instead of over-reacting to it and acting like it is an act of homophobia, perhaps you should open your mind to the truth and importance of the Pope's message.
