Message Boards Redux - Page One

Most of you know that we have a super set of message boards attached to this Forum. If you don't know, go take a look and post a little. I'll wait.

Because of the nature of the issues raised on this site our message boards (aka "Forum") attract a wide-range of people and posters:

  • Lesbians
  • Gay men
  • Bisexuals
  • Ambisexuals
  • Transgenderists
  • Parents of lesbians and gay men et al.
  • Friends of lesbians and gay men et al.
  • Children of lesbians and gay men et al.
  • Adults questioning their orientation
  • Youth questioning their orientation
  • Parents and friends of adults and youth questioning their orientation
  • Religious thumpers et al.
  • Generic bashers et al.
  • Mindless cretins
  • Other, etc. et al.

How then to determine what level of decorum, if any, there needs to be?

Personally, I feel pretty much the way that J.D. Tucille, one of my favorite Civil Liberties fellows, feels, who states it, "This is a site dedicated to the fundamental belief that the only thing better than free speech is more free speech. This site is also individually maintained by a very moody New Yorker."

The biggest different between him and me, at least on this issue, is most likely that I live on the proper coast; the left coast.

While there is a lot of speech I don't like, and a lot of conversation in which I tend not to participate, and some conversations in which I'll join privately but not publicly, I generally remain of the belief that it is the speech that I most dislike which must be protected above all else.

After all, how many people out there do not like what I have to say? How horrible it would be were they able to keep me silent because of their dislike.

Yet, because of all various types of people who do frequent the message board area, I believe that there have to be guidelines if not what - then where - various types of conversation and content will reside so that visitors will be in a position to make informed decisions about which threads they would like to read and which threads they would prefer to avoid.

Obviously, no deliniations can be hard and fast as there are too many greys in this world, but these are the basics:
