The Boundaries of Our Community/Labels in Our LivesDateline: 07/18/97 I got a piece of mail the other day. The question it asked was straightforward and quite simple:
The question gave me pause to think. After all, I know that the title of the site isn't, "Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans* Rights" etc. etc. etc., yet my intention is that this site is inclusive of all who wish to be a part of it. I like to think that the information provided is both applicable and welcoming to all who are interested in orientation based discrimination and issues. I just searched Infoseek for the word "bisexual" and received back 32,073 "hits." Searching on the word "gay" yielded 164,635 results. The word "lesbian" elicited 84,704 responses. "Transgender" provided the least feedback with 6,537 entries. (For the curious, the word "Queer" returned 28,617 sites). "What's the point?," you may ask. Well, the point is really quite simple.... Almost every one of those sites (and no, I didn't check all them, but in my search for resources I've seen, literally, thousands of them) has information applicable to any person who has ever had a question related to sexual orientation be they gay, lesbian, bisexual or whatever other label one wishes to use. I believe that exists here as well, albeit in a much easier to find format ::grin::. I am aware that there are issues unique to the bisexual community, not the least of which are gay men and lesbians who believe that they're "fence straddlers" or "only gay/lesbian when it's not inconvenient for them." I am aware that there are issues unique to the transgender community, not the least of which are festivals that restrict attendance to "womyn born womyn" exclusively or those who are pre-op and lack the funds to complete their transition. I am able to express my outrage at situations like the above - but unable to write from either of those perspectives. Just as I cannot write from the perspective of a gay man. All I can ever do, and what I promise to do for each and every person who visits here, is to continue to believe that we need less divisions and more equality in our lives, and that is a cause to which I am devoted. I invite any of you out there who have a perspective, or thought, different from my own to write to me with it - and if you'll allow me, I'll publish it so that you may share your thoughts and viewpoint with all who visit here.
