Random Notes
Dateline: 11/07/97
There are so many thoughts swirling around my head, I thought I'd share them instead of trying to turn any one of them into a feature at the moment.
- Chicago Hope. One of TV's best dramas (and I don't want to hear from all you ER fans ;>). One of the doctors is having a revelation that his race blind friend is perhaps not as race blind as he thought. I loathe identifying people by race or color, but I guess it's important to note that the Dr., Dr. Dennis Hancock (Vondie Curtis-Hall), is black, and his friend is white. Later, Dr. Hancock is pouring his heart out to another doctor, and starts describing himself. " ... and I'm gay." Wow. No warning. No previous indicators. Nothing. Just a " ... and I'm gay." We'll see. (Oh, and next week's show has this subplot, "Elsewhere in the E.R., a man is brought in after a brutal bar fight, and Dr. Wilkes (Rocky Carroll) discovers that he's been raped by another man." how convenient for them that Dr. Hancock is gay. He'll have special knowledge and be able to advise Dr. Wilkes. Uhuh.)
- Then we have President Clinton, who is going to speak at the Human Rights Campaign dinner. A gala for gay rights. What a guy. Why do I believe he'll stay away from the topics of how he didn't fulfill his promise to allow gays and lesbians to serve
openly in the military, and that he signed the
Defense of Marriage Act?
- Oh! And did you watch Ellen this past week (November 5th)? They talked about sex openly, but it was a male/female situation. In fact, Ellen promised a man sex (no, she didn't do it, she was lying). Ellen didn't even think about dating anybody. She did make some feminist statements and points, but so far nobody has suggested that she believes in equality for women only because she's gay. At least not yet. This episode was rated PG, no 14, no special parental warning. But we'll be back to normal next week (November 12th), from the upcoming episode guide at ABC, "Public Display of Affection: Ellen faces her toughest challenge in a relationship yet: Winning the approval of her new girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter. This program carries a parental advisory (PA). This program contains adult content. Parental discretion is advised. This episode carries a TV-14 parental guideline."
- And a week ago today (October 31st) 20/20 took a look at online predators. You know, those dirty old men who go after clean young boys. We call them pedophiles. They call them homosexuals. And the boy was upset because he "snapped after a homosexual affair with an older man he had met in an Internet chat room." I don't think so, I think he "snapped" because he told his parents that he thought he might be gay, and his parents told him that (paraphrased) "everybody feels that way at sometime in their life, but don't worry, you're normal, not really gay" and his classmates teased him and call him names like "faggot." To add insult to injury, not only did the police and his parents insist that he help the police entrap his friend, an adult who was willing to listen to him and accept him for who he is (and yes, have sex with him - which I don't think is a great idea), but then they attempted to have him committed. While they didn't say so, it was clear to myself and T, that was because he "still felt that way." Steve Silberman of Wired looked at this story, and shares his thoughts about the benefits of online for
gay youth.
- Last, but not least, Washington State voters voted down a proposal barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
And that was, to borrow a phrase, the week that was.
In Pride,
Deborah
