Coming Out Stories - Self Discovery

Dateline: 11/14/97

I've been out for so long, I sometimes forget that not everybody who is gay or lesbian is aware of it yet. Some of them may wander by this place and wonder what it was like for others.

Ages and experiences vary. I knew at least a couple years before I allowed myself to know. (Hmmmm.... that may be a sentence that works best in person, with proper inflection). Once I knew, that was it - there wasn't any agonizing process.

Therese didn't know until she was in her early thirties. She also didn't have to go through any "Oh my God!" stage.

For each person the process, the realization, is different. I explored the web, looking for a variety of stories. Interestingly enough, there are substantially more men than women who are choosing to share their experiences (which means, you know, I'm not only going to share mine, I'm going to ask you to share yours), here are some of the stories I found in my journey.

Ray explains how he "always knew."

Nathan knew, but didn't want to be like that, until his epiphany.

Dave, like myself, knew before he let himself know, then went through a process of deciding what that meant and letting others know.

Scotty asked God for an answer, then realized he had it all along.

Venus thought all little girls had girl dolls that "lived together and shared a bed."

Michael shares his coming out journal - starting with his marriage to a woman.

Jeremy's process took several years, including a period of dating women while still being attracted to men.

Justin used his own experiences as a basis to give advice to a friend.

Mike knew at an early age, and explains his process in a letter to his parents.

J. Abramchyk takes a look at the process for women.

Brian realized he was gay when he was watching a segment on 20/20 about a psychologist who claimed he could turn gay people straight.

In Pride,
Deborah
