Down & DirtyDateline: 12/26/97 Some of you were sufficiently astute to notice that I didn't put up a new feature last Friday. Needless to say, the holidays got the better of me along with some other fun stuff that will be the subject of an upcoming feature. The Also, since a lot of you seemed to be taking a vacation, I'm going to ask your thoughts on a question that has been plaguing me since the Bulletin Boards went live. What am I going to do when/if "hate" posts hit the boards? I'm not a big believer in censorship in any form... yet, at the same time I very much enjoy the opportunity to discuss the issues of the day, and just schmooze, without always having to spend time responding to the typical bigot cries of "You're all sick" (I'm not sick, my doctor says I'm in great health, thank you) or "Marriage is for a Man and a Woman to Create Children" (So infertile men and women shouldn't marry? How about those who choose not to have children?) or "Gays shouldn't serve in the military because [fill in some obnoxious reason]" (Surprise, we've been serving for years and none of those evils have occurred) or any of the other cries of the mob. Now, I could quietly delete posts that create that type of discussion (using the term "discussion" loosely), but it's possible that you folks want to see and respond to those types of posts. Or, I could tear the idiot poster a new cavity, then bar them from posting in response (Ah, the power of having the "moderator" tools). We might, as a group, decide to ignore such posts, sitting quietly and laughing at those who so clearly have no real lives so they need to denigrate the lives of others - but that leads to the possibility that their words will live on, hurting some and leading some casual surfers to assume their truth for lack of response. What I've finally decided to do is leave it up to you folks - let me know how you feel and how you think I should handle "those" types of posts. This space is for all of us, so we'll create the rules that work for us. In Pride, |
