GLBT News Sources

Dateline: 04/23/99

Many of you have written because you've been missing the news updates on this site. I had mistakenly thought that there were so many places to find GLBT news that you didn't need me anymore, but I was wrong. There are just too many stories out there for any one service to cover, and no media is really picking them all up. So it is time for me to return to providing you with the news (and archives) that you want, along with a few other places to find news when you are not able to find it here.

Datalounge has probably been doing GLBT news on the net longer than almost anybody (I started in '94ish, y'know?). Their scope and coverage is unsurpassed, and it is well-presented with a quick load time. They also archive their news for the researchers amongst us.

PlanetOut does a relatively decent job of keeping up with the news, however the site seems to load more slowly every time I visit. Their news coverage is generally written by on staff reporters, rewritten from wire stories or pulled from various content partners (one wonders why they aren't reprinting some of my better features).

GLINN, the Gay/Lesbian International News Network grabs news stories from all over the world and reprints them on their site so you never have to worry about a bad link. The downside is that their current news stories all reside on one long page which, while loading quickly, have to be scrolled through to find those stories which may be of interest.

Another of my favorite sites to see what is current and happening in the GLBT news world is GLAAD. GLAAD's news coverage tends to be its own press releases regarding various media portrayals and reactions to GLBT issues, but that's more than enough to keep them busy and me interested.

The ACLU is not only near and dear to my heart but it has an entire section on Gay and Lesbian legal issues. Current news on court battles will always be found here so long as the ACLU is involved. And, if it is an important issue or case, they will be.

The Advocate's web site includes daily headlines with summaries. A great way to get a quick overview of each day's newsworthy GLBT events.

This of course doesn't even begin to include the thousands of non-GLBT news sources available where you are also able to find GLBT news. But not as prominently, and not nearly as well covered.

Please feel free to share your own favorite GLBT news sites so that I may add them to my personal list.

In Pride,
Deborah
