And Love Came Calling

I won't and don't read a book just because it is published by a GLBT publisher or written by a GLBT writer or written for a GLBT audience. In fact, there is little that angers me more than reviewing the gay and/or lesbian fiction available at a local bookstore and rapidly reaching the conclusion that much of it was published because the publishers believe that the GLBT audience _will_ read a book because it is published by a GLBT publisher or written by a GLBT writer or written for a GLBT audience.

It was therefore with not only a little measure of concern that I consented to read and review "And Love Came Calling," a romantic novel by Beverly Shearer.

Much to my delight however, instead of having to come up with different ways to say, "Nice book to include in your collection if you're not a reader" I was instead smiling with pleasure, enjoying each and every moment of the read.

And Love Came Calling is set in the old west --- before there were any gay or women's rights movements and people like us were just called "different."

When it was dangerous enough to be a woman, but a woman without a man was risking much if she went to the wrong places unescorted, or was even walking down the street at the wrong times.

It is in this world that two very different women meet. Kendra (who goes by the name "Kenny") is on the run from a bad home situation, masquerading as a man in order to avoid discovery and the inherent dangers noted above. Sophie is a recent widow, thrust into the care of her brother-in-law and the west by an unfortunate combination of events including an unforgiving father and untimely death of her husband.

When Kenny and Sophie meet, the only thing that is instant is their mutual wariness, and when they meet again they begin to recognize all the reasons for that wariness.

To say much more would be giving too much away, but suffice it to say that the simple honesty of this book will leave you, to coin a phrase, satisfied.

Next time we'll take a new look at an old classic.

In Pride,
