- 1978 - Bisexual anthropologist Margaret Mead dies at age seventy-six.
- 1981 - U.S. Census results include a finding that only 59.8% of American household can now be classified as "traditional."
- 1987 - And the Band Plays On, Randy Shilts' remarkable book about AIDS and AIDS research, debuts at number 12 on the New York Times best seller list.
- 1989 - Massachusetts becomes the second U.S. state to pass a statewide gay rights law.
