Coming Out Stories Gallery - Lance Bateman
I was 43, divorced for several years from a 16 year marriage to a woman with whom I am still good friends, with two sons. One of seven children, I have always had a good relationship with my mother. I had told her for several weeks of my "friendship" with my new friend, Bill Woods. Finally, I was moving, going to share his place. I called her to give her the new address and phone numbers. Finally, she hemmed and hawed, and said "Now I don't want to be nosy or pushy, and I know this may not be any of my business, and I really don't care, but --- is this a 'couples' sort of thing?" Pause - pause. Yes, Mom, it's a couple sort of thing. And for the next several weeks, the "question of the week" on the phone between Oklahoma and Hawaii was awaited each week. Now, my mother has met Bill and embraced him as part of the family. My older sister, a minister, is waiting for the time she can perform our legal ceremony. |
