Separation of Bush and Constitution - Page 1
Or how George Bush chose to ignore the First Amendment

by Deborah Levinson

What Constitution?

President-Select (as civil rights attorney Gloria Allred likes to hyphenate him) George W. Bush found a perfect way to mark and celebrate the discovery of remains thought to be of Madalyn Murray O'Hare, her son and adopted daughter. According to an FBI spokesman, who stopped short of confirming the identity of the of the bodies, "All appeared to have their legs cut off. The remains and the ground around the bones were charred, indicating a fire at the scene."

O'Hare and party had been missing since 1995.

For those of you who might not recall for reasons of age or disinterest, O'Hare was, during her lifetime, the United State's most vocal and famous atheist.

She made her biggest headlines when, in the early 1960s, she filed suit to end prayer in public school. She ultimately prevailed and there have been people fighting to restore public school prayer ever since --- and hating Madalyn Murray O'Hare, who they blamed for taking it away. (An unjust accusation I might add since all O'Hare did was point out a section of the U.S. Constitution which seemed to have been overlooked the previous 170 years or so...)

So how does our glorious President, barely one week in office, recognize the confirmation of the death of this woman and the contributions she made to U.S. citizens ensuring that the Government would follow the dictate not to establish a state religion? A woman who would have been one of his harshest critics?

He announces the establishment of a White House office that would distribute billions of dollars to religious groups and charities over the next 10 years.

Bush said, "We will not fund the religious activities of any group, but when people of faith provide social services, we will not discriminate against them."

Bush signed two executive orders, the first to establish the White House office, the second instructing five Cabinet-level agencies to create entities to work with religious groups.

At first glance Bush seems to have found a way to work-around the inconvenience of the first amendment, but it does not take much in the way of scrutiny to realize that any resemblance to an acceptable execution of governmental powers and spending is a mirage.
